Project Log
Here you will find what has recently been updated. You should always
check this page. If you see something in here, you can assume that it's
been updated in the web pages. You'll probably want to print out the web
pages and then make notes on them as to what has changed here or just
reprint the warpage. For example, if you are just starting the project
today, nothing you read here pertains to you. But, tomorrow, if there's
an update, it may pertain to you.
Sorry for the delay in updating, have had a lot going on. I have a number of updates to post so stay tuned
Have some big updates coming, hopefully this weekend. I got a ftp server up and running as well, may take a few days for the new dns to kick in. Of course, this will all be documented. I would also like a little user feedback on an offer I have received to join the maximumlinux magazine associate websites. If you haven't been there or don't subscribe to there magazine, check out www.maximumlinux.com
-In 'Boot scripts', forgot to create the /var/log directory before creating the /var/log/wtmp file
-In 'KDE', added notes about installing kdegraphics
-In 'KDE', added a note about creating a symlink that's necessary for netscape to run
-In 'Networking', got the netkit-combo package finally working. You can now successfully compile telnet
In 'kde2', made a mistake on the symlink. It should be /lib/libshadow.so not /lib/shadow.so
-In 'router', forgot to do a chmod 755 /etc/init.d/firewall to make it executable
-In 'Boot scripts', added the command 'touch /var/log/wtmp'
-In 'Kde2', re-wrote the chapter so you can compile the beta from it's source! Come and get it. I'm going to re-compile and install it to make sure I didn't mess any of the instructions up so stay tuned
-In 'GCC-2.95.2 install', added the --disable-nls option to the configure line
-Moved the sysklogd package from 'A few necessities' to 'Making a new kernel'. This was necessary for the package to compile. It needs a working kernel with lilo ran in order to compile
-In 'Dynamic install', in the sysvinit package, added a part about editing the Makefile
In 'Dynamic install', in the util-linux package, forgot to copy the fdformat file from the /disk-utils directory
In 'Dynamic install', in the util-linux package, forgot to copy the fdformat file from the /disk-utils directory.
-In 'Dynamic install', in the util-linux package, forgot to copy the mkswap.8 file to /usr/man/man8 and forgot to make the ctrlaltdel binary which resides in the /sys-utils directory of this package
-The following packages have been updated and are now a part of BYO Linux: binutils-2.10, groff-1.16.1, lilo-21.5.1, modutils-2.3.17 (seems to be only available as a bz2 instead of a gz), make 3.79.1, shadow-2000090 -In 'Compiling stuff', changed the ./configure line in many of the packages to ./configure --disable-nls because some distros may have trouble compiling the packages. If you have managed to compile all these with sucess as they were written previously, then don't worry about this. If you are new to the project and are having trouble compiling, this may help you
-In 'Kernel install', removed reference to the scsi symlink, it's not necessary. Also, added a paragraph about changing the permissions on m4 and sed if you downloaded these from me.
In 'A few necessities', added configuration script for the vim package if your not satisfied with the way it's working.
-In 'A few necessities', installed the sysklogd package for system logging
-Changed the way the bootscripts handle loading up sysklogd. Check 'Boot scripts'
-Modified the kde2 chapter for the new beta version. Not to much changed except for the addition of a package, and of course, the new betas. Also, I changed the path slightly in /etc/profile. It's working very nice and is stable enough for daily usage. Also, made a note in this chapter for installing communicator-v475
-The packages rpm and util-linux have been updated and are now a part of the BYO Linux distributio
-In 'Dynamic install', fixed a typo for compiling the hardware clock. It should have read hwclock and not clock
-In 'GCC-2.95.2 install' and 'Dynamic install', added some configuration options for gcc-2.95.2. If you have already installed gcc, you should re-install it according to the new directions in 'Dynamic install' only
-In 'A few necessities', removed the procps package and put it in the 'Xwindows install' chapter. This is because xwindows is required to install this package
-Just when I get kde2 beta 4 working, beta 5 comes out. Oh well, I'll get to work on it.
Added the chapter 'Apache web server'
In 'A few necessities', added the procps package
-Added the chapter 'Linux as a router'
-The package modutils has been updated to 2.3.16 and is now a part of BYO Linux

-Changed the networking chapter slightly, it is now complet

-In 'Xwindows install', added a paragraph about ps/2 mice for those who may have trouble
-Changed the networking chapter slightly, it is now complete
-The kernel has been updated to 2.2.17 and is now a part of BYO Linux. If you get a message can't find the modules.dep file after reboot, type depmod to fix it
-In 'Making a new kernel', added a paragraph about removing or renaming the old modules directory in /lib/modules/X.X.XX
The linux86 package has been changed to bin86. Nothing to be done here if you have already installed linux86
